Fremont, Alameda County
Mission San Jose was founded on June 11, 1797, the fourteenth of the Spanish missions in California. Its adobe church fell in the Hayward earthquake of 1868 and was rebuilt to the original design in the 1980s. The mission gives its name to the surrounding Fremont district, one of five towns that merged to form the city in 1956.
